Two things decide a quote: the complete engine model and the engine number, both from the engine’s nameplate. Here is where to find the plate, and how to read the model number on it.
Identifying Your Engine
What we need from you
- The complete engine model, from the engine’s nameplate. Every letter and digit carries meaning.
- The engine number, from the same nameplate.
The plate on the machine is not the engine’s nameplate. Take both numbers off the engine itself.
Where to find the nameplate
The engine nameplate is on the engine’s valve cover, though the exact position varies by engine series. The examples below show what to look for: the model on the top line and the engine number on the bottom line.
If you cannot find it, photograph the engine from both sides and send the pictures with your enquiry. The industrial team can usually identify a unit from a photograph.
How to read a YANMAR industrial model number
Read a Tier 3 TNV model left to right. The part before the hyphen is the base engine; the part after it records how the engine was set up for its machine.
TNV series, Tier 3 — 3TNV88-BDSA
| Character | Position | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Number of cylinders | Three cylinders |
| TNV | Engine family | TNV series |
| 88 | Cylinder bore | 88 mm bore |
| B | Governing and output code | B = mechanical governor. U = mechanical governor and derating. Z = electric governor. E = electric governor and derating |
| D | Engine speed or special spec code | D = 3,000 rpm, variable speed. Every speed letter is in the table below |
| SA | Driven machine or customer code | Identifies the machine or customer the engine was specified for |
The first part, 3TNV88, is the base engine code. The driven machine or customer code can run to three characters.
Engine speed codes
The second letter after the hyphen is the rated speed. Variable-speed and constant-speed engines use different letters.
| Rated speed | Variable-speed code | Constant-speed code |
|---|---|---|
| 3,600 rpm | A | H |
| 3,400 rpm | B | – |
| 3,200 rpm | C | – |
| 3,000 rpm | D | F |
| 2,900 rpm | I | – |
| 2,800 rpm | K | – |
| 2,700 rpm | L | – |
| 2,600 rpm | M | – |
| 2,500 rpm | N | – |
| 2,400 rpm | P | – |
| 2,300 rpm | Q | – |
| 2,200 rpm | S | – |
| 2,100 rpm | V | – |
| 2,000 rpm | W | – |
| 1,800 rpm | – | G |
| 1,500 rpm | – | E |

Tier 4 engines
Tier 4 models add a letter after the bore, as in 3TNV88F or 4TNV98C. Send us the complete model and the engine number and we will read the rest for you.
