2.5 HP with Tiller Handle and Manual Start on a 20 in Transom
The Suzuki DF2.5L5 is a 68 cc single-cylinder four-stroke outboard rated at 2.5 hp across a 5250-5750 rpm full-throttle operating range, the tiller-handle, manual-start build of Suzuki’s DF2.5, in the Portable range that runs from 2.5 to 30 hp. Suzuki builds it around a set of named technologies: an integral overhead fuel tank, an offset crankshaft, three-way storage and a redesigned tiller handle.
Powerful and efficient. The 68 cc single-cylinder powerhead feeds from an integral overhead fuel tank through a one-way valve, so the engine can be started by gravity feed without opening the cover, even after long-term storage. Positioning the crankshaft slightly off center of the cylinder reduces lateral pressure against the cylinder wall.
Easy to live with. The DF2.5L5 is built as a tiller handle model with manual trim and tilt on a 20 in transom. A recoil starter turns it over, and it weighs 31 lb dry. Suzuki rebuilt the fuel and lubricating systems so the outboard can be laid down for storage on any of three sides, port, starboard or front, and reworked the tiller handle to cut the vibration that causes fatigue. A silencer shaped around the air intake keeps the noise level low.
Built for saltwater. Rounded carrying handles are built in for two-handed lifting, and the tilt system locks in three raised positions and lowers smoothly without catching. The DF2.5 carries the California Air Resources Board’s Three-Star Ultra Low Emission rating.
- Integral overhead fuel tank with gravity feed, startable without opening the cover
- Three-way storage on port, starboard or front
- Offset crankshaft to reduce lateral cylinder pressure
- 68 cc single-cylinder powerhead, 2.5 hp at 5250-5750 rpm
- Tiller handle with manual trim and tilt
- 20 in transom, 31 lb dry weight
- Built-in carrying handles for two-handed lifting
Rigging. This is one specific build of the DF2.5, not the model line. Suzuki’s model codes read left to right from the horsepower, with T for power tilt, H for a tiller handle, and S, L or X for a 15, 20 or 25 in transom, so a tiller handle model with manual trim and tilt on a 20 in transom reads THL.
