9.9 HP with Tiller Handle and Electric Start on a 20 in Transom
The Suzuki DF9.9BEL5 is a 327 cc two-cylinder four-stroke outboard rated at 9.9 hp across a 4700-5700 rpm full-throttle operating range, the tiller-handle, electric-start build of Suzuki’s DF9.9B, in the Portable range that runs from 2.5 to 30 hp. Suzuki builds it around a set of named technologies: battery-less electronic fuel injection, Suzuki’s Lean Burn Control System, a 12 V 12 A charging system and the Suzuki Anti-Corrosion System.
Powerful and efficient. The 327 cc two-cylinder powerhead runs Suzuki’s battery-less electronic fuel injection, the first fuel injection system in this class that does not need a battery to run the engine. Suzuki’s Lean Burn Control System predicts fuel needs and delivers a leaner mixture, which Suzuki credits for the outstanding fuel economy of this range.
Easy to live with. The DF9.9BEL5 is built as a tiller handle model with manual trim and tilt on a 20 in transom. Electric start turns it over, and it weighs 108 lb dry. The charging system puts out 12 V, 12 A, enough for lights and a small electronics package. Oil changes take 1.06 qt / 1.0 L, and the engine runs on regular 87 octane fuel.
Built for saltwater. Suzuki’s Anti-Corrosion System applies a specially formulated finish directly to the outboard’s aluminum surface, which allows maximum bonding and helps protect the parts that are constantly exposed to saltwater. The DF9.9B carries the California Air Resources Board’s Three-Star Ultra Low Emission rating.
- Battery-less electronic fuel injection, a first in this class
- Suzuki Lean Burn Control System for fuel economy across the range
- 327 cc two-cylinder powerhead, 9.9 hp at 4700-5700 rpm
- Tiller handle with manual trim and tilt
- 20 in transom, 108 lb dry weight
- 12 V, 12 A charging system
- Suzuki Anti-Corrosion System for saltwater durability
Rigging. This is one specific build of the DF9.9B, not the model line. Suzuki’s model codes read left to right from the horsepower, with T for power tilt, H for a tiller handle, and S, L or X for a 15, 20 or 25 in transom, so a tiller handle model with manual trim and tilt on a 20 in transom reads THL.
