Gyro Stabilization for Boats from 60 to 70 Feet
Smartgyro SG80 is the gyro stabilizer of choice for boats from 60 to 70 ft, or up to 60 tons. It delivers 15,400 Nms of angular momentum and up to 42,300 Nm of anti-rolling torque at its maximum rated speed of 5500 rpm. It is the largest single-phase unit in the range, running on 220 V AC with a 24 Vdc control input, and fits the same envelope as the SG60 while delivering more anti-rolling torque.
Serviced on board. Ideal for both new builds and refit installations, the SG80 can be fully serviced on board the vessel without the need to lift it out for maintenance, which Smartgyro says ensures significant time and cost savings. Its modular design means the unit can be serviced, maintained and assembled directly inside the boat.
Built around six technologies. A liquid cooling system dissipates heat from the motor and spinning bearings while also cooling the inverter and hydraulic manifold. A sealed vacuum flywheel enclosure minimizes air drag to increase performance and reduce heat and power consumption. The control module uses motion sensors and an Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) to monitor and process real-time boat behavior. A pressurized, closed-loop braking system controls the gyro dynamically through hydraulic cylinders and a proportional valve. And for driving performance, the unit automatically locks the gyro’s counteracting forces during high-speed turns.
Power and installation. The SG80’s AC supply is 220 V nominal, 50/60 Hz, single phase, with a 24 Vdc control input. It reaches stabilization, at 65% of rated speed, in 27 minutes, and full rated speed in 50 minutes. Smartgyro gives operating AC power of 2.0-3.5 kW, which depends on sea state and excludes the sea water pump, with a maximum of 4.9 kW during spool-up. The unit needs a sea water supply of 15-30 LPM / 4-8 GPM.
