Electric Power In A YM Engine Footprint
The SDe10 is the middle of the three-model electric saildrive range: a fully integrated 48 V unit rated 10 kW / 13.6 mhp at 2700 rpm, with the motor, the saildrive and the cooling system built as a single assembly. YANMAR developed the whole system in house, from the saildrive to the e-motor to the control system. It is designed for day sailors and cruisers up to 40 feet, depending on displacement. It shares its housing, weight and dimensions with the SDe7 — the two differ only in rated output and in the battery capacity they require.
Easy to install. The drive shares its footprint with the YANMAR YM diesel, one of the most popular sailboat engines, so no hull modification is needed. It arrives prefilled with the oil used for both lubrication and cooling, and mounts on eight bolts; the boatbuilder or authorized dealer connects the control system and the battery, and the installation is done. Every electrical component is fitted inside the hull. YANMAR describes the 48 V platform as plug-and-play integration.
Quiet and low maintenance. Lithium-ion battery power and minimal moving parts keep the SDe10 quiet under way, and with fewer parts than an internal combustion engine there is less to maintain. There are no exhaust emissions. Cooling is an in-house closed-loop oil system integrated into the saildrive itself, so no additional cooling components are required.
What is supplied. The standard package covers the drive, the control system and the wiring: battery cable connectors, the 4.3-inch TFT display, a control head in either side-mount or top-mount form, a switch panel, a backup panel, harnesses in 3 m, 5 m, 10 m and 20 m lengths, and a terminator. An E-stop switch, CAN cables and a lanyard switch are available as options. Battery and propeller are not part of the standard delivery. The SDe10 requires a minimum battery capacity of two LFP304 units, 15.6 kWh.
What to expect under way. The SDe10 carries an S2-60 duty rating, meaning a minimum of 60 minutes at full rated output at 30 degrees C sea water and 50 degrees C ambient air temperature. YANMAR publishes expected runtimes of 5 hours at cruise speed, 3 hours at high speed and 1 hour 30 minutes at full speed. Those figures are estimates taken at the minimum battery capacity above; actual performance varies with additional loads and with conditions on the day.
